Emancipated Stories is a collection of writing and art by those behind bars meant to bridge two separate populations: those inside and out. Alone, each page means “I am here.” Together, all the pages mean, “We are here.” It was founded by Quiara Alegría Hudes and her cousin Sean Ortiz during his incarceration after the two realized the power of letter-writing as a way of bearing witness. Soon, incarcerated authors nationwide were sharing pages and volunteers on the outside - strangers - were writing back, saying: “I see you.” Our visual materials and public art installations are created by Yazmany Arboleda.

Who can submit? Those currently or previously incarcerated or held in detention.

What can I submit? One page, single-sided. Tell the world who you are: your concerns, your dreams, what’s on your mind right now.
